Former Preschooler Returns as a Trainee Educator

Lucy

Hastings Secondary College student Lucy Richards has come full circle in a truly heartwarming way. Once a young child cared for at Goodstart Early Learning, Lucy has now returned—not as a student, but as a School-Based Trainee, ready to provide the same love and support she once received.

Lucy’s journey is a testament to the strength of community connections and the nurturing environment fostered within early education. The same centre that guided her in her formative years now plays a key role in shaping her career, supporting her through a School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) while she works toward her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Balancing one day of hands-on work experience, one day of TAFE study, and three days of school each week, Lucy is gaining both qualifications and invaluable real-world experience.

The team at Goodstart Early Learning couldn’t be prouder to welcome her back:

"This year we welcome Lucy to our team! Lucy was a previous child who attended our centre (pictured here with Rach at her graduation) and is completing her Certificate III with us as a school-based trainee during Year 11 and Year 12. It is so great to have you back, Lucy!"

Her return is a beautiful reflection of the centre’s deep-rooted commitment to fostering not only the children in their care but also the aspirations of young adults within the community. Now, with the expert guidance of the very educators who once supported her, Lucy is stepping into a role where she can offer that same warmth and encouragement to the next generation of children.

Hastings Secondary College is incredibly proud to see students like Lucy thrive in their SBAT journeys, demonstrating the power of work-based learning and strong community ties.

For more information on SBATs and work experience opportunities, students are encouraged to speak with their Careers Advisors at either campus or our SBAT Officer.
