Access Outside of School Hours
Outside school operational hours, all users are required to have a PCYC membership and pay for any relevant program costs. As part of the partnership, all Hastings Secondary College students are provided with a PCYC membership to use outside of school hours at no cost, though they must still pay for any PCYC program costs, just like other community members. It is important to note that these outside school-hour programs are run by PCYC, not school staff.
The Planning and Establishment
The conception and extensive planning for this unique partnership began in 2016. It is the first partnership of its kind, where a school and a PCYC work together in a joint-use facility on a co-located school site. The facility primarily serves Hastings Secondary College, accommodating students from both the Westport and Port Macquarie campuses during school hours. Outside school hours, on weekends, and during school holidays, the facility is open to the wider community, maximizing its usage and ensuring that this valuable asset remains accessible to all.
Building a Safe and Welcoming Facility for our students and the community
The modern building has been designed with the needs of both the college and the broader community in mind, creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. An extensive consultation process was conducted to maximize the operational potential of the facility. This process involved seeking feedback from the community and collaborating with staff and students to finalize the interior design, programs, and features that would best serve the needs of Hastings Secondary College students. Our College Deputy Principal, Geoff Duck, and PDHPE Head Teachers from both Westport and Port Macquarie campuses traveled to Sydney to research the latest PCYC programs and present their findings to college students and staff. They were impressed with each facility's programs, offerings, and PCYC’s ability to be flexible and cater to each community’s specific needs.
“As a college, our aim is all about improving student learning outcomes, and PCYC's philosophy is about empowering young people to reach their potential. It's just a perfect partnership.” – Geoff Duck
