Hastings Secondary College year 7/8 STEM students take part in a combination of the ancient art of Sumo wrestling, along with the high tech equivalent of a demolition derby in a battle of the Sumo-bots.
Lego Sumo-bot wrestling is a contest where two LEGO robot contestants try to push or flip each other out of a circular ring. The first Robot to touch the floor outside of the ring loses. The last Robot remaining in the ring wins.
One ring…two robots enter…only one will be victorious!
A battle consists of two robots operating autonomously, attempting to find and push each other out of a ring. First, to touch the ground outside, the ring loses the round. Rounds last up to 3 minutes each. The winning team progresses to the next stage until the grand champion is determined.
Pushing, lifting, distractions, and hiding are the only Robot weapons as physically destructive elements are banned from the game. Suction, magnets, and sticky wheels are also not allowed.
These miniaturised robots represent how learning about engineering and entrepreneurship can go beyond the classroom and into the real world in both a fun and competitive way.
