New Era in STEM: Girls Robotics Team Wired for Success

Girls Robotics Team Wired for Success

An exciting new chapter in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program has emerged with the launch of our all-girls robotics team, the Hastings Heroines, expanding our robotics program in a progressive and inclusive way.

The Hastings Heroines team strengthens our robotics program by providing a space for collaboration, creativity and confidence-building for girls in STEM. This initiative is being championed by two of our outstanding students, Stephanie and Nuala, whose leadership and enthusiasm have been instrumental in creating this new opportunity.

Nuala encouraged her peers to get involved: “If you're interested in STEM or just curious to see what it's all about, we’d love for you to get involved. You’ll have the chance to try a bit of everything including mechanical, wiring, coding, driving, strategy and more.”

Stephanie, now in her sixth year of FRC, shared how beneficial the program has been: “It’s honestly been one of my favourite parts of school. It’s also a big reason why I want to study astrophysics and aerospace engineering at university.”

Interested students are encouraged to attend and explore what the program offers. The team meets at the following times:
• Tuesday during Period 5
• Wednesday after school until 5pm

The Hastings Heroines will complement our two existing teams, The Hastings Heroes and Hastings Sidekicks, with each team building their own robot and competing independently. All three teams participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition, where students design and build a robot to complete specific challenges and earn points. It’s hands-on, fast-paced, and offers valuable real-world STEM experience.

The main competition takes place annually in March and provides an exciting opportunity to qualify for the World Championships. Additional events are held throughout the year, including the Duel Down Under, scheduled for the end of July.

We look forward to seeing where this journey takes us!
