Hastings Secondary College is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of our talented Industrial Technology student, Jayden McBain, whose exceptional HSC major work has been selected for SHAPE 2024, an exhibition showcasing exemplary major projects from across the state.

Jayden’s project, a meticulously crafted chess table, demonstrates an extraordinary blend of artistic vision, technical skill, and passion for woodworking. This modern and practical piece was designed to embody elegance, functionality, and durability. It features a combination quality Australian hardwoods including red mahogany, east coast blackbutt, and Queensland walnut to achieve a striking and sophisticated contrast.

Motivated by a desire to challenge himself, Jayden employed advanced woodworking techniques, including laminate bending, curved housing joints, inlaying, double dovetails, marquetry, upholstery, and intricate finishing. These skills, honed over six years of dedicated study and practice, were integral to bringing his vision to life. Drawing inspiration from online platforms and past HSC projects, Jayden researched every aspect of the design process, from timber selection and joinery, to time management and integrating innovative technology such as the CNC router and advanced CAD programs. His commitment to excellence is evident in the final product, which features seamless borders, routed chess piece slots, and laminate-bent legs that add both complexity and elegance to the table.

The journey to completing this remarkable piece was not without its challenges. Limited workshop time, timber delivery delays, and the complexity of bending timber for the legs tested Jayden’s resolve. However, through perseverance, strategic planning, and dedication, Jayden excelled in creating this extraordinary piece.

Jayden’s teacher and mentor, Mr Jack Steinmetz, couldn’t be happier or more proud of his impressive achievement. Jack’s guidance and encouragement throughout the project played a pivotal role in helping Jayden refine his skills and achieve the pinnacle of success by being selected for SHAPE 2024. Selection for the exhibition is an exceptional honour that reflects Jayden's hard work, creativity, and skill.

Jayden’s chess table stands as a testament to the outstanding educational opportunities provided at Hastings Secondary College and the dedication of our staff to nurturing student talent and highlights the incredible potential of our students to excel in their chosen fields.

The chess table will serve as a centrepiece for chess games in his home, complete with drawers to store chess pieces and a spacious border for comfort and convenience during play.

We congratulate Jayden on his well-deserved success and look forward to seeing his chess table showcased among the best HSC major works in the state and we are excited to see what the future holds for him.

The SHAPE 2024 exhibition will be held at Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, Dawes Point, Sydney, from 17 March to 12 April 2025.
