Principal Message, Port Macquarie Campus - 26 May 2023

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a busy but successful term at Hastings Secondary College, Port Macquarie Campus.

One of the many highlights has been the College and Campuses role in the Artwalk on June 9. It was the first time I have attended the event, which was a unique chance to showcase public education in the Port Macquarie district. There were many positive comments from members of the public and it was wonderful to see students from all the public schools display their efforts to family and friends during the evening. There are some great images of this installation on our Facebook page. Thank you to Leanne Jeffrey, Leon Ruhl, Jess Wilkinson, Kate Naylor and all the other staff and students who combined to make this a success.

The Campus has also been involved in a School Climate Survey this week. This is conducted by School Infrastructure NSW to better understand how students, parents/carers and school staff experience their school. Thank you to all the students, parents and teachers who have already completed this survey. For those who are yet to complete this survey the link is https://www.nsipartnerships.com.au/ and the code you need is HSPMPARENT.

This week I also had the pleasure of attending the Lower North Coast Dance Festival at the Glasshouse. The College had three separate performances: Beauty from Within (Year 7), Read All About it (Years 8-11) and Deadly Dance (Years 7-12). The performances were amazing and a credit to the school. It was also wonderful to have our school SRC leaders as the hosts for the performances. Thank you to Benita Seymour for her hard work in choreography and organisation as well as Stevie Donovan who supported the Deadly Dancers.

Another highlight of the term was a Reconciliation Day assembly. Our guest speaker was singer/boxer and Wiradjuri and Mununjali woman, Shanell Dargan and her story was truly inspirational for all staff and students. Shanell talked about the many obstacles she overcame in her childhood, how the support of her grandmother was vital to her success, along with her love of singing. She concluded her presentation with a moving rendition of My Island Home. Shanell also discussed how her local PCYC provided a place for her to train as a boxer and expressed an interest in visiting the school to see the completed PCYC on the Port Macquarie Campus.

Early next term we celebrate NAIDOC week with many exciting events scheduled. The last day of Term 2 is June 30 and the first day back for students is July 18. I hope you all have a safe and restful break.

Kind regards
