Support Services for Students with a Disability
Hastings Secondary College has a provision of support classes and programs for cater for a range of identified disabilities.
Multi-categorical Program for Students
This program operates on both Campuses. This provision supports students with a wide range of disability categories and learning needs, including but not limited to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The program focuses on supporting students to succeed in their chosen education pathways within the whole school setting and is coordinated by highly trained staff who are experts in the field of Special Education. It is a highly individualised and flexible program that is able to cater to students across a broad range of academic abilities ranging from Gifted and Talented to those undertaking the Life Skills curriculum.
Students who are deemed eligible for this program must apply for a placement through the DEC Regional Placement Panel.
Before School and Breaktime Social Program
As a part of the Multicategorical Program, both Campuses operate a homeroom which is open before school as well as during lunch breaks.
These rooms are spacious. and there are spaces for students that prefer a smaller, quieter setting. This is an extremely popular and successful initiative where students have embarked upon a wide range of group and individual activities including, UNO, computers, and board games.
Support Unit Classes
The Hastings Secondary College provides a number of support options at both our Port Macquarie and Westport campuses. Students who are deemed eligible for any of these classes must apply for a placement through the DEC Regional Placement Panel.
Port Macquarie Campus, classes are configured in the following way:
- class for students in Years 7 to 12 with a mild intellectual disability. (IM)
- multi-category classes for students in Years 7 to 12.
Westport Campus, classes are configured in the following way:
- class for students with a mild intellectual disability. (IM)
- multi-category classes for students in Years 7 to 12.
- classes for students with a moderate to severe intellectual disability.
Support classes are highly specialised and accessed by students with an intellectual disability who require an individualised, Life Skills based curriculum, other than that which can be provided in the broader school setting. Students enrolled in these programs have access to smaller class sizes and highly trained teaching staff. There is also a School Learning Support Officer assigned to each class.
Through a process of consultation with parents and carers, students in these classes can access mainstream courses, programs, and activities across the broader school environment where required.
