Investing in our schools

The NSW Government is investing $8.6 billion in school infrastructure over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 160 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This builds on the more than $9.1 billion invested in projects delivered since 2017, a program of $17.7 billion in public education infrastructure.

The NSW Department of Education is committed to delivering new and upgraded schools for communities across NSW. The delivery of these important projects is essential to the future learning needs of our students and supports growth in the local economy.

Project overview

We are upgrading Hastings Secondary College to support the student community. Hastings Secondary College comprises of the Port Macquarie Campus (PMC) and Westport Campus (WPC). The upgrade will involve works at both campuses.

The Port Macquarie Campus will deliver new and upgraded learning spaces, new Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) facilities, new Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) building, a redeveloped school entry and a new shared use multi-sports facility in partnership with Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC) NSW.

The Westport Campus will deliver relocated and upgraded administration office, new flexible learning spaces and a redeveloped school entry.

Modifications to planning approval – Port Macquarie Campus

In June 2022, the department lodged a proposed modification of the consent conditions for the project with the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE). These proposed changes will improve the overall functionality of the upgrade and ensure the project secures the best value for money.

The modification included the following scope changes:
▪ design changes to the entry of Building A and covered walkways
▪ design changes to Building B, including refurbishment of the first floor level
▪ design changes to the CAPA building, including adding new rooftop plant equipment and external stairs
▪ removing parts of the Building L refurbishment works from scope
▪ changes to landscape design, including additional tree planting
▪ changes to building façade materials.

The proposal was on exhibition between 2 August 2022 and 15 August 2022 to provide stakeholders and the community an opportunity to provide feedback. Full details of the modification can be accessed on the NSW Planning Portal website: https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects/projects/hastings-secondary-college-upgrademod-1.

Modifications to planning approval – multi-sports facility building

We have submitted a new proposed modification of the consent conditions for the new multi-sports facility with the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE). The modification was submitted on 11 November 2022. These proposed changes will ensure that the multi-sports facility secures the best value for money. The proposed scope changes include:

▪ replacing the basement carpark with a ground-level carpark towards the rear of the multi-sports facility
▪ a material change to the external facade
▪ reducing the size of the circular window
▪ configuring the roof to include roof top ventilation
▪ additional landscaping
▪ minor internal modifications. The proposal is currently on exhibition until 12 December 2022 for stakeholders and the community to provide any feedback. Full details of the modification, and details of how to submit feedback can be found on the NSW Planning Portal website: https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects/projects/modification-2-modificationproposed-pcyc-building.

Progress summary

For the Port Macquarie Campus, works are almost complete on the new TAS facilities and these are expected to be finished in late 2022. We are currently waiting on planning documentation to start demolishing Building T, and we will inform the community when this works starts.

For the Westport Campus, work on the new administration facility and external works are progressing well.

Next steps

For the Port Macquarie Campus, there will be construction work to finalise the linkway to Buildings A and L over the school Christmas holiday period. A works notification will be shared with the school and local community with details of these works closer to the time.

For the Westport Campus, once the new administration facility is complete, staff will move into these buildings to begin to work from them. This will enable the contractor to start Stage 2 works.
